New group or channel

Groups are end-to-end encrypted exactly like 1:1 chats: the server and Cloudflare see only ciphertext. Anyone with the key can read, so a group is only as private as its members.

Disappearing chats: read this once

These chats are forward-secret: the message keys live only on this device and are deleted as messages are read, which is exactly what makes past messages unrecoverable to anyone later.

The trade-off: history is not kept, and it is lost on a new device, after a password recovery, or if you clear this browser's data. For a chat you want to keep and read anywhere, use a normal (non-disappearing) chat.
